GonnaBe CEO Hank Leber at Starting Your Startup – ROC, May 30, 6:30 PM

A social weather map is how Founder Hank Leber described GonnaBe in a pandodaily profile from December.

GonnaBe is a new platform coming out of a stealthy public beta today to best each of these previous solutions. The startup, which launched out of Westwood accelerator StartEngine, offers a radical new interface that combines the social calendars of a user’s network of friends with local event and promotion calendars. The end result is a stupid easy and addictive way to figure out what everyone is doing, and equally as important, what they should be doing.

gonna_beMobile LAVA’s next event, “Starting Your Startup,” will examine some of the practical, nuts-and-bolts components of building a new business in the mobile and online spaces from multiple perspectives – technology, teams, legal and fund-raising. Entrepreneurs are naturally infused with passion, ideas, and a desire to attract people to their passion and ideas. Often, however, the practical realities of starting a business can get lost in the midst of an entrepreneur’s enthusiasm, and easily avoidable mistakes can result in huge headaches down the road, or worse — business.

Hank will be joined by Chromatik Founder Matt Sandler, Louis Wharton of Stubbs Alderton,  Mark G. Sogomian, (Ernst & Young), TX Zhuo (Karlin Ventures)  and moderator Lori Kozlowski (Forbes).

Chromatik punching above its weight class

From PandoDaily – Since launching into private beta a year ago and landing the house band of “American Idol” as an early client, music practice and performance platform Chromatik has been punching above its weight class. The company continued this trend when it landed Grammy-winning artist Bruno Mars, Virgin Records co-chairman Jeff Ayeroff, and other music industry heavyweights as investors in its November 2012 seed round.

So wouldn’t be great to ask Matt what that’s like?  Now’s your chance.  Mobile LAVA has invited Matt and a few other special guests to come discuss how their company got off the ground and running full speed.   May 30th, 6:30 PM at Real Office Centers in Santa Monica (90404).  Register here for:  Start your Start-up

SandlerMatt Sandler is a professional musician and entrepreneur. He has extensively toured the West Coast, taught woodwinds in the Los Angeles Unified School District, and was recently a lecturer in music technology at UCLA. However, performing and teaching music was not always his gig — Matt’s held A&R and technology roles at KROQ 106.7FM and Capitol Records. And from there, he was on the early team of the social marketing startup CitizenNet, leading business development and sales. Blending his experiences in technology and education, Matt founded Chromatik to redefine how people practice, perform, and learn music. Matt holds a BA in Saxophone Performance from UCLA and was named a CA Distinguished Arts Scholar by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

BIA/Kelsey’s Booth and Boland Featured at Mobile LAVA Nov 15 Event

Matt Booth, chief strategy officer and program director, Interactive Local  Media, BIA/Kelsey, stated that he remains “very bullish on interactive spending,  and especially on new mobile monetization methods, like point-of-sale offerings,  that are showing performance improvements. In fact, we expect mobile growth to  offset some of the slowing in core search and display in the outer years of the  forecast.”  MediaPost Publications:  Local Media: Slow Rev Rise, Digital to hit Double-Digits

Matt will be joined by Michael Boland, a keen observer of Mobile Local Media and its impact on ad spend, interaction and customer behavior.   “Overall, BIA/Kelsey reports that about 0.6 percent of local ad spending is currently devoted to mobile. Though this is a U.S. figure, mobile’s share and growth rate are projected to be similar in many other developed nations. Also, as this survey reveals, mobile’s current share of revenue is slightly higher than other local media, such as newspapers, which indicates a strong position for directory publishers,” according to Mr. Boland.   Majority of Directory Publishers See Mobile as Important Revenue Stream Over Next Three Years

BIA/Kelsey advises companies in the local media space through consulting and valuation services, research, Continuous Advisory Services and conferences. Since 1983, BIA/Kelsey has been a resource to the media, mobile advertising, telecommunications, Yellow Pages and electronic directory markets, as well as to government agencies, law firms and investment companies looking to understand trends and revenue drivers.

These are among the most insightful observers of the Mobile Local Media space and they will be sharing their insights and perspectives with Mobile LAVA tomorrow evening at tiato, 6:30 PM.  Pre-registration is required at the LAVA website.  This event is free to LAVA members, all others $35 to attend.

LAVA Annual Meeting

Mobile Ecosystem of Southern California and Beyond

The program for July 10th will be at the Skirball Center in west Lost Angeles starting at 7:00 AM.

The morning opens with networking and exhibits.  The meeting starts with a brief report to the membership as this is LAVA’s Annual Meeting.  We’ll then have Jeff Liu, Principal and Sr. Managing Director of Ernst & Young present some original research E&Y has done on mobile tech, business and trends.  We’ll have Shuki Lehavi, CEO and Co-Founder of Gumiyo to provide his perspective on starting and growing a company in a hot sector.  Joe Jasin of Polaroid, one of the thought leaders for wireless internet technology has been invited to speak.  And we’re recruiting a VC to fill out the group.  Networking and exhibits after the event for as long as desired.

Rather than go for a panel structure, we want the speakers to make an extended  statement of their perspective.  To do that we would give each speaker a set of four key questions to help frame their presentation — those questions might be:

  • Give an overview of your role and your perspective in the Mobile marketplace
  • How has Mobile changed the playing field in today’s market
  • What do you see the next major changes coming in Mobile
  • Where are the opportunities for entrepreneurs in Mobile going forward?

So you can participate:  Register here.  Tell your LinkedIn connections.

Mobile start-ups can exhibit:  e-mail: jd.lavamobile@gmail.com

Or provide your company with a great opportunity to get noticed by sponsoring this event:  len@lava.org

A remarkable panel, a white-hot market and a couple of hundred of the region’s investors, entrepreneurs, start-up executives, service providers and business leaders all assembled to network, learn and make deals.  A good way to start a day!  Join us July 10th.
