TX Zhuo adds VC perspective to Mobile LAVA Event: Starting Your Mobile Start-up

TX ZhuoTianxiang Zhuo is the Managing Partner of Karlin Ventures and has been involved in the startup space since his college days. TX started an online textbook retail company while in college, served as the CFO for an electric vehicle startup, Lit Motors, and worked for Innovation Endeavors, a seed stage venture fund backed by Eric Schmidt. Prior to Innovation Endeavors, TX worked for McKinsey & Co in their London office where he was part of their financial institutions and consumer goods practices. TX received a M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B.A. in Economics and Mathematics (summa cum laude) from Wesleyan University. TX is also an Associate of Chartered Accountants (U.K.) affiliate.

TX will be joined by Matt Sandler (Chromatik), Hank Leber (GonnaBe),  Mark G. Sogomian, (Ernst & Young), Louie Wharton (Stubbs Alderton) and moderator Lori Kozlowski (Forbes). The program will examine some of the practical, nuts-and-bolts components of building a new business in the mobile and online spaces. Entrepreneurs are naturally infused with passion, ideas, and a desire to attract people to their passion and ideas.  Often, however, the practical realities of starting a business can get lost in the midst of an entrepreneur’s enthusiasm, and easily avoidable mistakes can result in huge headaches down the road, or worse — business failure.

The window is closing on an opportunity to participate in a candid conversation with some of the people making Silicon Beach the destination to start, grow and fund start-ups.  This event is meant to inform founders, executives, teams, the service providers,  investors and broader community about what it is like to be a part of this dynamic community.

Panel:

Start-ups have myriad challenges for the early stage team but none feel the stress as intensely as the founders and especially the CEO. Add that to near celebrity status that founders can attain through proximity to a hot area or cause or technology or market. Bring the need to be always on, in the moment, part of the show which layers weight and complexity. Combine the challenges, the notoriety, the act and expectations and you brew a toxic cocktail that is consumed routinely by entrepreneurs working in an area like Silicon Beach, in an exploding space like mobile while maintaining a positive aura.

iPhone lesson for our economy

There is a lot of reaction to a recent NY Times article on Apple’s production of iPhones in China.  It is a very important article for a number of reasons.  The most significant, IMO, is the recognition that these sorts of products for mass markets are not going to be produced domestically.  We can argue as some do about whether we should be trying to retain low skilled, low wage domestic manufacturing jobs, but the salient point is that the Chinese (and soon others will follow) are basically subsidising our consumer based economy through their industrial policy.

Under these conditions, brands and developers of consumer products are acting rationally by moving manufacturing overseas.  We will not be successful competing against manufacturing firms in countries like China that use industrial policies to stimulate their economies.

The larger lesson for the domestic brands is not to fight this inevitable trend – rather to take advantage of this trend.  We can grow our economy through innovation and commercialization of technologies in which the US leads the world.  Let the manufacturing of high volume, low value devices go to those countries who need to grow their own economies through exploiting economies of scales.  We should emphasize the start-up and creation of advanced technology products and custom services.  And we should shift our remaining industrial production to focus on high value, low volume custom engineered products.

Amazingly enough the US still manufacturers a tremendous number of products that are consumed domestically or exported.  And Los Angeles still ranks as the leader in domestic manufacturing.  It is incumbent upon us to continue to invent and innovate for mass consumer products even though those products will be manufactured elsewhere.  And we should continue to focus on the design, engineering and production of custom products locally.
