Louis Wharton of Stubbs Alderton joins panel for Starting Your Startup

Louis A. Wharton is a Partner of the Firm and member of the Los Angeles Venture Association Board of  Directors.  Louis’ practice focuses on advising startup, emerging growth and middle market companies across a spectrum of industries in securities compliance, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate matters.  He counsels clients in the technology, internet/e-commerce, pharmaceutical, apparel and entertainment industries, among others.

Louis WhartonMobile LAVA’s next event, “Starting Your Startup,” will examine some of the practical, nuts-and-bolts components of building a new business in the mobile and online spaces from multiple perspectives – technology, teams, legal and fund raising. Entrepreneurs are naturally infused with passion, ideas, and a desire to attract people to their passion and ideas. Often, however, the practical realities of starting a business can get lost in the midst of an entrepreneur’s enthusiasm, and easily avoidable mistakes can result in huge headaches down the road, or worse — business failure.

Joining Louis will be Matt Sandler (Chromatik), Hank Leber (GonnaBe),  Mark G. Sogomian, (Ernst & Young), TX Zhuo (Karlin Ventures)  and moderator Lori Kozlowski (Forbes).

The Real People Doing the Real Talk at ROC Thursday 28 Feb at 6:30 PM

This is an awesome time to be a founder and entrepreneur in Los Angeles. An intoxicating elixir of vibrant start-up communities; favored industries and memes for investment; incubators & accelerators; deep talent pool; undeniable positive momentum; remarkable universities; and, glitter and hype that accompanies fast growing businesses and fast liquidity events. So what is it like in a hot space, hot place and cold reality of innervating a start-up?

Mobile LAVA has invited some local, successful entrepreneurs and observers of the space to come and share their experiences, expectations, frustrations, insights and coping mechanisms. With great opportunities comes great responsibilities and the need to be always on, meeting goals, satisfying constituencies inside and outside the team, unrelenting drive, persistence, the ability to manage risks, people, perceptions and to maintain your humanity.

Matthias Galica will moderate the evening’s conversation.  Emcee at BEASTMODE.FM, curator at StartupDigest LA, village idiot, anti-socialite, secret admirer, student loaner, continental drifter, professional bootlegger, spin doctor, self-referentialist, road runner, personal journalist, cold-ass person of pallor.

LAVA Annual Meeting Featured Presentation: Mobile Ecosystem by Jeff Liu, Ernst & Young, Principal and Sr Managing Director, US Group Head, Technology M&A and Capital & Debt Advisory

Jeff Liu has over 15 years of lead and exclusive advisory experience and 12 years of corporate finance and M&A experience as a Managing Director in Software and Internet banking, and as group head at Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, and Alex. Brown & Sons.  Jeff has over $10 billion in completed financing work in technology investment banking including: Symantec convertible ($2B), Neustar IPO ($695M), Marimba IPO ($92M) and Docent IPO ($101M).  He has over $5 billion in completed M&A transactions including: Raytheon’s acquisition of Oakley Networks, GKN acquired by Oracle, and CA’s acquisition of Wily.

From his vantage point in San Francisco and with 25 years of investment banking and advisory service experience, Jeff is ideally positioned to comment on technology, innovation, trends, markets and activities that drive wealth creation.  In fact, he is often called upon to provide his insights as he did here:  M&A Deal Flows Checked By Economic Slowdown, Says Ernst & Young

“Cloud computing, ‘big data’ analytics, mobility and social media are the major trends still driving activity in the tech sector—and this trend will continue,” said Jeff Liu, US Technology Leader, Ernst & Young Capital Advisors, LLC. “With more debt and equity deals in the last few months, traditional tech giants and newer, well-capitalized social media players are the primary buyers looking to add key businesses and expand into markets. Deals are happening faster, and there is a fair amount of PE interest in the sector.”

Jeff was an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company where he drove technology innovation strategy (driving products from R&D), strategic targeting (product portfolio optimization) and merger integration.  He has a JD and MBA from Stanford and a BA from Harvard.

This Los Angeles Venture Association event is open to members, guests and the general business community.   Register online at LAVA.
